‘Game of Thrones’ Creators Say Coffee Cup Snafu Is ‘Kind of Funny to Us Now’

Following the series finale on Game of Thrones, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were nowhere to be seen. The creators joked they would be “drunk and very far from the internet” as Season 8 of the HBO epic came to an end, and they stayed true to their word. There’s been a divisive but loudly negative response to the final season, and it’s only now that they’ve sat down for an interview about it all.
Speaking with Japanese TV network Star Channel, Beniofff and Weiss talked about their favorite moments of the season and how it felt to say goodbye to the show. They also addressed one of the most infamous snafus of the infamous Season 8: the mysterious modern-day coffee cup that appeared in a scene of the episode “The Last of the Starks.”
“You know, I think in Persian rugs it’s tradition that you make a little mistake when you’re making the rug because only God can do anything perfect,” Benioff said when asked how it got there.
“That’s why I put the coffee cup there,” Weiss joked. “It was a conscious, concerted statement of our imperfection.”
Explaining how it actually happened a little further, rather than joking about the situation, Benioff said, “We’re concentrating so much on Daenerys and Jon Snow, that we just didn’t see this coffee cup right in the middle.” He continued, “At first I couldn’t believe it, and then it was kind of embarrassment because…how do we not see this coffee cup in the middle of this shot? And then eventually it was just kind of funny, because it’s…this one is just a mistake, and it’s kind of funny to us now.”
During the chat, they also gave their first comments on receiving a record-setting 32 nominations for Game of Thrones at the 2019 Emmys. “I thought that the last season [Season 7] would have been the peak, and that we would’ve ended up with maybe a couple less [nominations], at best,” Weiss said. “Ten of the actors are nominated, and so many of the crew members,” Benioff added. “So it’s just a great excuse for everyone to get drunk again.”
