Welp. It all comes down to this. Quite literally. After nearly 80 hours of Game of Thrones, everything is set up for the series’ penultimate episode to be the most impactful one of all. Most of us thought that the show’s crowning achievement would be episode three, in which the living beat the dead thanks to Arya Stark’s killer instinct and last minute heroics. But as Emilia Clarke promised us earlier this week, next week’s episode is shaping up to be the one for all the marbles.
It’s probably why the just-released teaser reveals next to nothing. There are some brooding looks courtesy of Jon Snow and Euron Greyjoy, and well, that’s about it. But based on this Sunday’s episode, and the fact that episode five is directed by GoT’s resident battle guru Miguel Sapochnik, it appears as though we’re in for a truly harrowing Sunday.
But before we get there, it’s worth taking stock of episode four, which was truly overwhelming on so many levels. Once again, HBO has provided as with a guiding North Star, in the form of its weekly “Inside the Episode,” in which showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss help us put into perspective all the madness that’s unfolding in Westeros.
If you already feel like looking ahead to next week, watch episode five’s teaser up top. But if you’re not a total sociopath, and need time to process the magnitude of episode four, HBO has you covered down below.
