Get a Closer Look at ‘Game of Thrones’ Intense VFX Process

Fans of a show known for its CGI prowess are collectively expressing shock at just how different said show looks without the CGI.
As seen in numerous behind-the-scenes clips, some straight from the official Game of Thrones YouTube channel’s ongoing “Game Revealed” series, several of the HBO series’ most celebrated sequences look downright unrecognizable during filming. That’s to be expected.
“It is much more than a job, it is our way of life,” VFX producer Steve Kullback previously said of the Thrones experience. “There’s a lot about working on a project like this that’s like joining the circus. We move 10,000 miles away from home and we put up our tent to put up our little show, and then we tear the tent down and move it somewhere else.”
From the Night King’s army to a certain Cersei view, the show’s VFX team takes sequences (some of which are predominantly green screen) and infuses them with the aesthetic fans have come to expect from the series. Tuesday, BuzzFeed assembled some side-by-side CGI comparisons following the airing of the show’s historic battle sequence. Here’s that. Last month, HBO included a behind-the-scenes VFX featurette among its final season promo materials. Catch that above.
After Sunday’s “The Last of the Starks,” Thrones is now just two episodes away from the end.
Anyway, I made it 234 words before mentioning the coffee cup. That’s pretty good.
