Gina Rodriguez’s Comments About Women’s Pay Sparks Social Media Discussion

During a roundtable conversation with Gabrielle Union, Ellen Pompeo, and Emma Roberts, Gina Rodriguez discussed women’s pay in America.
“I get so petrified in this space talking about equal pay especially when you look at the intersectional aspect of it, right? Where white women get paid more than black women, black women get paid more than Asian women, Asian women get paid more than Latina women, and it’s like a very scary space to step into,” she said at the 1:02 mark in the video below, per Atlanta Black Star. “Because I always feel like I fail when I speak about it because I can’t help but feel already so gracious to do what I do and I feel like, culturally, I feel like I was raised to just feel so appreciative of getting here.”
People who thought Rodriguez was only talking about pay gaps in the acting industry were upset that she implied black women get paid more than Latinas.
According to recent data pulled by National Partnership for Women & Families, white, non-Hispanic women make 77 cents to that of a white, non-Hispanic man’s one dollar, black women make 61 cents, Latinas make 53 cents, Asian women make 85 cents, and Native American women make 58 cents.
Editor’s note: This story has been updated to reflect Rodriguez’s comments were about women’s pay in general.
