‘God of War’ TV Series in Talks From Prime Video and Sony

Written by on March 7, 2022

PlayStation’s hugely popular God of War franchise, which will continue with Ragnarök this year, could get a TV series at Amazon Prime Video.

Deadline says Amazon is in negotiations with Sony for a show based on the property, which follows the adventures of demigod Kratos. The Expanse creators and executive producers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby are reportedly helming the adaptation, while Amazon’s The Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins is also expected to be involved. Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions will “likely” co-produce, the outlet writes.

God of War debuted on PlayStation 2 in 2005 and led to at least four major sequels and numerous spinoffs. Initially focusing on Kratos enacting his revenge against the Greek gods who betrayed him, the franchise shifted to Norse mythology with its 2018 entry. That game won countless awards for Sony and sold over 19.5 million units on PS4, according to the PlayStation Blog. Kratos is set to face off against Thor, and possibly Odin, in the forthcoming God of War Ragnarök on PS5 and PS4.

If God of War is ordered to series, it’ll be the third TV property based on a PlayStation property in development. HBO is working on a high-profile adaptation of The Last of Us, with Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey to star, while Peacock recently ordered a Twisted Metal show starring Anthony Mackie. Prime Video also has another big video game adaptation on the way with Fallout, based on the long-running RPG series of the same name, and a growing slate of marquee fantasy projects led by Lord of the Rings and The Wheel of Time.
