A new streaming service set for a late 2019 launch date could be the future home of the expanding Gremlins universe.
A new Gremlins series should arrive sometime after 2020, per the Hollywood Reporter. The series is reportedly in development now with writer/executive producer Tze Chun (Gotham) and give fans a chance to follow a young Mr. Wing, a character originally portrayed by Keye Luke and most known for being the former caretaker of Gizmo.
The series is said to be in development with producers Warner Bros. Television and Amblin Television for the upcoming WarnerMedia streaming service. The app is slated to launch later this year. Original programming, possibly including this untitled Gremlins prequel series, is expected to begin rolling out in 2020.
Talks of bringing Gremlins back in some capacity have been reported with sporadic bouts of consistency in the year since the release of The New Batch. Most of the talks revolved around a reboot of some sort, with original director Joe Dante saying way back in 2015 that he would not be involved with such a thing.
“They remake pictures that people just didn’t want to see remade,” Dante said of reboot fever at the time. “Did anybody really want to see another RoboCop?”
A Gremlins prequel series would be well-timed in 2020, arriving firmly in the wake of new takes on other classic ’80s and ’90s horror properties such as It, Pet Sematary, and more.
