Christian Wood has reportedly become the third NBA player to test positive for coronavirus.
The Athletic‘s Shams Charania announced the news Saturday night, citing sources with direct knowledge of the situation. Insiders said the Detroit Pistons forward is doing well despite the test results and is not exhibiting any symptoms at this time.
The Pistons have confirmed one if its players has tested positive for COVID-19; however, the team did not identify which athlete.
The franchise’s statement read:
A player on the Detroit Pistons, who is under the care of team medical staff and in self-isolation since Wednesday night, was tested for COVID-19. A preliminary positive result came back on March 14. The health and safety of our players, our organization, those throughout our league, and all those potentially impacted by this situation is paramount. We are working closely with team medical staff, state and local government and public health officials and the NBA on reporting. The individual will remain in isolation and under the care of team medical staff.
Wood is the first NBA athlete to test positive for the disease outside the Utah Jazz, which had two confirmed cases as of Saturday night. On March 11, the league announced Utah’s Rudy Gobert had become the first player to be diagnosed with coronavirus. His teammate Donovan Mitchell tested positive the next day.
In light of the diagnosis, the NBA announced it was suspending its season indefinitely, and advised teams that recently played the Jazz to take precautionary measures. Players from the Pistons, Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, and Toronto Raptors—all of which faced off against Utah 10 days prior to detection—were told to self-quarantine.
On Friday, the Raptors announced none of its players or staff members tested positive for COVID-19; however, the team confirmed some of the athletes will continue to self-isolate.
“All of the members of the travel party who were tested on Wednesday in Toronto have received their results, and they are all currently negative,” the Raptors statement read. “These results will not affect our protocols, however. Those asked to self-isolate by Toronto Public Health will continue to do so. We will all practice social distancing and good hand hygiene and, most importantly, carefully monitor our health.”
Stay tuned as NBA teams continue to announce their players’ test results.
