Apple TV+ has released the first trailer for its reboot of Amazing Stories, an anthology series from Steven Spielberg.
Stories will tell “five unique stories” with a cast that includes Dylan O’Brien (The Maze Runner), Victoria Pedretti (You), Josh Holloway (Lost), and the late Robert Forster (El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie). The trailer doesn’t offer much in terms of what we should expect from the series, other than Forster’s character appearing to possess a wide array of superhero powers.
The original version blended fantastical elements with science fiction and some suspense, so it’s more than likely that this reboot will mimic that same blueprint, especially with Spielberg, the man behind Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, back at the helm.
Spielberg signed on to the series three years ago at a time when Apple was turning to high profile creators to spearhead projects that would ultimately boost their library and its creditability. Amazing Stories also serves as Apple’s foray into the anthology series where the likes of FX and Netflix have been able to repeatedly capture audiences with American Horror Story and Black Mirror, respectively.
Apple TV’s decision to revisit established IP could be how the streaming service hopes to pique the interest of younger viewers while also trying to capitalize on the nostalgic factor of an older crowd. Amazing Stories first aired in 1985, and wasn’t renewed by NBC when the show’s two-season order came to an end in 1987. Despite its brief tenure, the series experienced success with five Emmy awards, and 12 nominations.
Amazing Stories will launch on March 6.
