Background

Mere days after it was reported that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) had come up empty in its efforts to secure celebrity presenters for the 2022 edition of the Golden Globes, this year’s winners across film and TV have been announced.

There was no audience for the Jan. 9 event at the Beverly Hilton, with a number of pandemic-focused safety policies also in place. In a statement released to Complex and other outlets ahead of the broadcast, an HFPA rep announced that Kyle Bowser—the Senior VP of the NAACP Hollywood Bureau—would speak on the five-year Reimagine Coalition initiative during the ceremony.

Last month, nominations for the 79th annual Golden Globes were unveiled as the controversy persisted in connection with (among other things) an investigative report from The Los Angeles Times last year that showed the HFPA had zero Black journalists among its voting membership at the time. Allegations of unethical behavior were also detailed in the Times report, and shortly after its publication, NBC said it would not be providing a home for the Globes ceremony.

More recently, the HFPA has announced a number of reforms, including the addition of a total of 21 new members. In a statement, the HFPA said the new members include “new and predominantly diverse journalists,” with plans in place to add a similarly sized number of additional new members by July of this year.
