‘Hobbs & Shaw’ Tops Box Office, ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ Passes $100M Mark

Written by on August 11, 2019

Hobbs & Shaw once again finished atop the box office, collecting $25.4 million during its second weekend.

Variety reports that the Fast & Furious spinoff has now earned $108 million in North America and $224 million overseas. The film pulled in $60 million during its opening weekend—and while predictions had the movie grossing between $60 to $65 million, it was enough to surpass The Lion King and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Previous Fast & Furious installments have seen considerably larger openings: 2017’s The Fate of the Furious saw a record-breaking $532 million worldwide debut, on its way to becoming the second-highest-grossing entry in the franchise with $1.2 billion in total box office. Furious 7 (2015) went on to become the highest-grossing installment with $1.5 billion globally—and the previous film, 2013’s Fast & Furious 6 grossed $788.7 million internationally.

Meanwhile, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’s strong box office continues to be a major win for people who have franchise fatigue. According to Forbes, the filmed grossed a total of $11.6 million during its third weekend of release, increasing its domestic total to $100 million. The film earned $40.3 million during its debut, making it Tarantino’s biggest opening ever. More importantly, it arrives at a time when original films without ties to a pre-existing property struggle to make a mark at the box office.
