Even with the general aura of positivity that surrounds us all every time April hits the 20th, reviving a cult classic for a sequel is always a hard sale.

MTV has teased How High 2 as a “buddy comedy of blunt proportions” featuring original star Mike Epps alongside newcomers like D.C. Young Fly and Lil Yachty. Epps’ fellow 2001 original alumni Method Man and Redman, however, do not appear in the sequel.

Speaking on that move back in October, Redman said the sequel’s lengthy development period ultimately contributed to them not being involved.

“What happened is that a branch that’s under Universal decided [they were] gonna shoot this movie,” he told the Grass Routes Podcast at the time. “And they did not need permission from us because we didn’t own the rights to How High.” Though both Redman and Method Man were offered parts in Bruce Leddy’s How High 2, they declined.

The film counts cameos from Lil Baby and Blac Youngsta, as well as executive producers Coach K and Pierre Thomas from Quality Control. In an interview with Variety Friday, D.C. Young Fly confirmed that he did in fact use actual marijuana on the set. “I really had the munchies and they always had snacks on set,” he said. “How High 2 was just beautiful from the jump. We got high and did our thing.”

Fittingly, the comedy had its premiere on that aforementioned fateful date, and early reactions range from what you might expect to something else you might expect. See if your assessment of the long-awaited sequel lined up with some of the early reactions below.
