Iconic Red Sox First Baseman Bill Buckner Dies at 69

Written by on May 27, 2019

Legendary Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner passed away on Monday at the age of 69.

ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap tweeted a statement from Buckner’s wife Jody, who revealed that Buckner’s death was the result of a lengthy battle with Lewy Body Dementia.

“Bill fought with courage and grit as he did all things in life,” the statement said. “Our hearts are broken but we are at peace knowing he is in the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.'”

Buckner was an MLB all-star, won a batting title, and finishing top 15 in MVP voting for three years in a row.

Lewy Body Dementia is a sickness related to Parkinson’s disease, attacking the body during REM sleep and causing vivid hallucinations. Comedian Robin Williams suffered from the disease; according to his wife, Susan Schneider-Williams, the hallucinations plagued the entertainer before he died by suicide in 2014.
