Idris Elba might not be the next James Bond, but he could be the next Macavity. According to Deadline, the actor is in talks to join the upcoming movie adaptation of Cats.
The film version of the mega-hit musical from Andrew Lloyd Webber has already signed on some big-name talent. James Corden, Ian McKellen, Jennifer Hudson, and Taylor Swift are all attached to the film.
The King’s Speech director Tom Hooper is charged with helming the movie. He’s previously brought a big-name musical to the movies, turning Les Miserables into a film starring Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway.
The original Cats on Broadway and London’s West End ran for 21 years, a record at the time. Currently, it sits behind The Mousetrap, Les Misérables, Phantom of the Opera, another Webber production, The Woman in Black, and Blood Brothers. The musical follows a group of cats on the night that they make the decision about whether or not members of their group will head on to the next life.
Variety says that Elba’s participation is practically a done deal so you can start speculating now about who he’ll play. Even if he wasn’t signing on to one of the most-beloved musicals of all-time, Elba stays busy. He recently said that he was open to collaborating with ASAP Rocky either on film or in the studio.
