Idris Elba Talks Life Before Acting in ‘Saturday Night Live’ Monologue

Idris Elba‘s Saturday Night Live debut got off to a terrific start, despite his reported nervousness.
Shortly before his hosting gig, the British actor attended the grand opening of Feroce and the Fleur Room in NYC. Sources told Page Six that Elba was overheard talking about his SNL appearance and how he was experiencing jitters.
“He was talking about what rehearsals were like and what skits they were looking forward to, and was saying he was nervous,” the source said. “[But] everyone was encouraging him.”
Elba didn’t show any signs of anxiousness. The 46-year-old kicked things off with the customary monologue in which he discussed his life before he became a superstar actor. “Before this, the closest thing I did to a comedy was ‘The Wire,’ he said.

Elba is now gearing up for two big premieres. His comedy series Turn Up Charlie will arrive Netflix on March 15; his directorial debut Yardie will hit theaters the same day. Elba will also perform at Coachella next month, and will star in the Fast & Furious spinoff, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, which is scheduled for an Aug. 2 release.
