J.K. Rowling Unfollows Stephen King After His ‘Trans Women Are Women’ Tweet

Written by on June 30, 2020

J.K. Rowling unfollowed Stephen King and deleted her tweet praising him after he declared that “Trans women are women” on Twitter, per Uproxx.

On Sunday, Rowling posted a series of tweets addressing the apology from Labour MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle over his remarks in response to her essay where she attempted to clarify her stance on transgender rights.

In one of her tweets, Rowling used a quote from feminist activist Andrea Dworkin, which King retweeted.

“I’ve always revered @StephenKing, but today my love reached – maybe not Annie Wilkes levels – but new heights,” Rowling wrote in a tweet which has since been deleted. “It’s so much easier for men to ignore women’s concerns, or to belittle them, but I won’t ever forget the men who stood up when they didn’t need to. Thank you, Stephen.”

Since King was retweeting Rowling, who has previously faced backlash over her views which came across as transphobic, someone wanted to know where he stood on this issue. “Trans women are women,” King responded.

Rowling has recently been outspoken about her feelings towards trans women because the UK government was contemplating a reform to the Gender Recognition Act, which would allow people to self-identify as a man or a woman, instead of having to go through an arduous process that could take more than five years.

The Guardian reports UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is likely to scrap this plan.
