Janelle Monáe’s “I Like That” Hits No. 1 on Adult R&B Songs Chart

Written by on November 18, 2018

Janelle Monáe is leading the Billboard Adult R&B Songs chart for the first time ever.

The singer reached the milestone with her “I Like That” record, which climbed from No. 3 to No. 1 this week after the receiving an 11 percent boost in plays. “I Like That” dropped back in April and served as the fourth single off Monáe’s acclaimed studio album Dirty Computer. The 32-year-old artist explained the inspiration behind the track in an interactive album guide:

[“I Like That” is] inspired by wack ass fuckboys everywhere (from the traphouse to the White House) who make the lives of little brown girls so damn hard. Like they told ya’ll back in those Black Women’s studies classes… BUT SOME OF US ARE BRAVE…

According to Billboard, “I Like That” marks Monáe’s third entry on the Adult R&B Songs chart, following the Miguel-assisted “Primetime,” which peaked at No. 29 in 2014; and “Make Me Feel,” which reached No. 30 back in April.

Earlier this week, Billboard announced  Monáe will receive the trailblazer award at their 13th annual Women in Music event.

“Janelle Monáe’s insatiable drive to incorporate new, untold stories into her artistic projects—while synthesizing classic funk, soul, R&B, jazz, hip-hop and rock—makes her a truly unique voice,” Billboard’s editorial director Jason Lipshutz said. “Popular music is more interesting today because Janelle Monáe is part of it.”

The Women in Music event will take place Dec. 6 in NYC.
