Following the announcement that the two prolific stars would be headlining the Super Bowl LIV halftime show, Jennifer Lopez and Shakira sat down for a special interview looking ahead to the performance.
“I love that it’s in Miami,” Lopez said at the top of the discussion, which aired during the Packers and Eagles game Thursday night. “It is a very Latino town, and then they picked the two of us.”
“I feel incredibly honored and humbled to be, in a way, next to J.Lo representing the Latino community that is such an important force in the United States,” Shakira added.
Speaking further on that representation, J.Lo looked ahead to what she and Shakira hope to accomplish with their performances.
“I love that the Super Bowl has two women performing this year, that they have two Latinos performing this year,” she said. “For me, it’s their 100th anniversary but it’s also the marker of a new time, not just for the NFL but for this country. [It] sends an important message to everyone.”
Though they haven’t yet discussed exactly what they’re going to do once they hit that stage, the two artists are promising “the best Super Bowl ever” with an overall message that J.Lo described as “a statement of love and unity” that they hope will resonate “for a long time.”
The Super Bowl takes place at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens Feb. 2.
