Comedians and celebrities are mourning the death of their friend and colleague, Norm MacDonald.

The 61-year-old passed away on Tuesday after a nearly decade-long private battle with cancer.

“He was most proud of his comedy,” Lori Jo Hoekstra, a producer and friend of MacDonald’s, said in a statement. “He never wanted the diagnosis to affect the way the audience or any of his loved ones saw him. Norm was a pure comic. He once wrote that ‘a joke should catch someone by surprise, it should never pander.’ He certainly never pandered. Norm will be missed terribly.”

McDonald was perhaps best known for manning Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update desk from 1993 to 1998, and appeared in films like Billy Madison, Dirty Work, The People vs. Larry Flynt, and Man on the Moon. He also starred in TV shows like Fairly OddParents, The Larry Sanders Show, Mike Tyson Mysteries, Last Comic Standing, Girlboss, and The Norm Show, among others.

But beyond his credits, McDonald was revered by his fellow comics and friends for his unique style of joke telling. After news of his death broke, many people took to social media to share some of their favorite clips from his many  talk show appearances.

His good standing and influence in the industry was also evident by the tributes that came pouring in on social media from notable figures like Jim Carrey, Seth Rogen, Jon Stewart, and more.
