While John Boyega has never been shy about expressing his opinion towards Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, he wouldn’t go as far as to say that the film was embarrassing.

On Sunday, Boyega responded to a tweet referring to Episode IX as being embarrassing. “Embarrassing? LOL you wish,” he wrote. “Very fulfilling, some disappointments but yet not that big of a deal. Everyone has moved on…..”

Boyega, who played Finn in the latest trilogy in the franchise, previously posted a series of photos on Twitter—on New Year’s Eve of all days—summarizing the series of events that led to a baffling kiss between Kylo Ren and Rey. The tweet, which was jokingly captioned “Star Wars romance,” received backlash from Reylo shippers who always hoped to see those two characters end up together.

After spending a few of his remaining hours of 2019 engaging with the backlash, Boyega started off the new year by fanning the flames with a hilarious video where he’s literally deflecting all the haters.

Boyega’s feelings toward the new Star Wars trilogy started to sour when Rian Johnson made some bold choices with The Last Jedi that he disagreed with.

The Force Awakens I think was the beginning of something quite solid, The Last Jedi if I’m being honest I’d say that was feeling a bit iffy for me,” Boyega told Hypebeast. “I didn’t necessarily agree with a lot of the choices in that and that’s something that I spoke to Mark [Hamill] a lot about, and we had conversations about it. And it was hard for all of us, because we were separated.”

As Boyega alluded to in the above quote, he wasn’t alone in being criticial toward The Last Jedi. Johnson, however, has defended his decisions, arguing against the idea that long-running franchises like Star Wars shouldn’t feel the need to simply cater to their fans—an approach that is done in spades in Rise of Skywalker, much to J.J. Abrams’ rumored opposition.
