John Mulaney Addresses Sobriety and Getting Out of Rehab in ‘SNL’ Monologue

Written by on February 27, 2022

John Mulaney has returned to his roots.

The 39-year-old comedian returned to Studio 8H this week to serve as Saturday Night Live’s guest host. The episode effectively made Mulaney an official member of the series’ Five-Timers Club, which includes celebrities like Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Alec Baldwin, Tina Fey, and Paul Rudd.

Mulaney got his big break back in 2008, when he landed a writing gig for the comedy sketch program. He worked for SNL until 2012, but didn’t make his hosting debut until six years later. The Chicago native went on to host in March 2019 and twice in 2020.

Since then, Mulaney has nabbed countless headlines for changes in personal life, including a drug relapse, his split from Anna Marie Tendler, his new relationship with Olivia Munn, and the birth of his first child.

Mulaney opened his monologue with explaining how grateful he was to be here.

“Since I last hosted, different things have happened,” Mulaney says, starting to explain the scenario of his intervention. “When I walked into my intervention, I knew right away that it was an intervention.”

Mulaney continued to talk about going to rehab and having to do an exercise with a counselor called “Breaking Up With Your Drug Dealer.” He ended with speaking about his baby Malcolm, sharing a funny story about him reacting to a bright light after he was born.

He is now gearing up for his North American “From Scratch” comedy tour. The trek will kick off next month, and will include stops in Portland, Austin, NYC, Chicago, Toronto, and Pittsburgh.

You can watch Mulaney’s monologue below. The episode also featured musical guests LCD Soundsystem.
