Director Todd Phillips took to Instagram on Tuesday to confirm that a sequel to 2019’s Joker is in the works.
Alongside a picture of the cover of the script, Phillips revealed the working title of the film: Joker 2: Folie à Deux, which translates into English as “folly of two” or “madness of two,” and serves as a French term for a psychological disorder that impacts two or more individuals. Phillips also posted a photo of Joaquin Phoenix reading through the script.
The news arrives just a few days after film insider Matthew Belloni of Puck News reported Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav revealed that Phillips was “getting pretty close on a ‘Joker’ sequel.”
Phoenix talked about the possibility of a sequel while speaking with the Playlist back in October.
“I mean, I dunno,” he said. “From when we were shooting, we started to —you know, uhh, this is an interesting guy. There are some things we could do with this guy and could [explore] further. But as to whether we actually will? I don’t know.”
Released in October 2019, Joker grossed over $1 billion at the worldwide box office, earning 11 Oscar nominations, including for best picture, best director for Phillips, and best adapted screenplay for Phillips and Silver.
Meanwhile, Phoenix took home the Oscar for best actor, becoming the second actor to win an Academy Award for his role as the Clown Prince of Crime, after Heath Ledger received a posthumous Best Supporting Actor prize at 2009 Oscars for The Dark Knight.
