‘Joker’ Screenings at L.A.-Area Theater Canceled Following ‘Credible Threat’

Written by on October 4, 2019

One movie theater in the Huntington Beach, California area reportedly canceled showings of Joker after a “credible” threat was reported to authorities. Two screenings of Joker at the Century Hungtong Beach and XD theater were called off on Thursday following a threat, according to Variety. Officers were sent to the scene.

“The police department deemed the threat was credible enough to provide a uniformed presence at the theater,” the Huntington Beach Police Department said in a statement. “As the investigation continued, our officers worked with the managers of the theater, who determined they would cancel the final two showings of the movie and close the theater out of an abundance of caution. Based on the investigation, and in working with theater management, it was determined that the theater could safely reopen today and resume normal operation.”

The threat was reportedly made in response to the opening showings of Joker. Showings at the movie theater have since resumed, but police officers will “provide patrols” nearby for the weekend. “We are working in conjunction with the theater’s management as well as mall security to provide a safe environment to the public,” the statement added. “This incident is currently under investigation, and no further details will be provided.”

The U.S. government issued a statement to service members prior to the release of Joker, warning to remain vigilant over possible threats from “incel” type extremists who “idolize the Joker character.” It has also been reported that NYPD officers will go undercover for screenings of the film.

Joker has been fighting criticism about the nature of its violent content during its press run: Indiewire called it “a toxic rallying cry for self-pitying incels.” Still, it’s managed to break the October Thursday preview record.
