‘Joker’ to Exceed Second Weekend Projections in Another Record-Breaking Box Office Showing

Joker continues to laugh all the way to the bank in its second weekend at the box office. Deadline reports that the Joaquin Phoenix-led film is now expected to earn $58.7 million, soaring past initial projections of around $40 million.
If these new figures hold true, Joker will surpass the $43.1 million netted by Gravity in 2013 to assume the new box office record for the biggest second weekend for a film in October. It would be another impressive milestone for the Todd Phillips-directed vehicle in its two-week run.
On the very first day of its release, Joker broke the previous record for an October preview held by Venom when it made $13.3 million at the box office on Thursday alone. Joker kept the momentum going by surpassing Venom for domestic opening weekend, biggest worldwide launch, and international launch of all-time for the month of October.
Joker is now projected to pass $400 million internationally by Saturday with half a billion well within reach by Sunday. Given the film’s immense box office haul, talk of a sequel should only intensify, but Phillips has ultimately left that decision in the hands of Phoenix.
“If he was willing to do it, and if people show up to this movie, and Warners came to us and said, ‘You know what? If you guys could think of something,'” Phillips told Total Film Magazine in August. “Well, I have a feeling that he and I could think of something pretty cool.”
Phoenix also appears to be quite interested in exploring what else can be done with the Joker in future projects.
“I wouldn’t have thought this is my dream role, but now, honestly, I can’t stop thinking about it,” he said on Popcorn with Peter Travers. “I talked to Todd a lot about what else we might be able to do, in general, just to work together, but also specifically, if there’s something else we can do with Joker that might be interesting. So, it ended up being a dream role. It’s nothing that I really wanted to do prior to working on this movie.”
