Kansas City Chiefs Chairman Says Team Will Make ‘Right Decision’ on Tyreek Hill

Written by on April 27, 2019

On Thursday it was confirmed that Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill was suspended from the team after disturbing audio of him surfaced. Hill was facing possible child abuse charges before the audio was released, but authorities announced they would not be charging him. In wake of the audio however, in which he can be heard threatening his child’s mother, Crystal Espinal, the investigation was reopened.

ESPN reports that Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt has made it clear that the team isn’t rushing to make a decision regarding Hill’s future with the team. He said they will make the “right decision.. at the right time,” implying that it could be a while before there’s a verdict on him. Kareem Hunt was released from the Chiefs last year the same day a video of him violently assaulting a woman in a hotel lobby surfaced.

“That goes back to the ongoing investigation with Tyreek and really our ability to get any information,” Clark Hunt said during a press conference on Saturday. “That audio was really among the first information we had received on the investigation.” The Chiefs signed Hill back in 2016, despite knowing that he had previously plead guilty to punching and choking his girlfriend at the time.

“On every player you bring into the organization, there’s some element of risk,” Hunt explained. “It could be his playing ability. It could be things that distract him while off the field as well as trouble they get into. That’s a risk you take. It’s something that as a franchise, we have to be willing to own when it doesn’t go the right way. That’s something I believe, and I know it’s something (general manager Brett Veach) believes as well.”

He added that it hasn’t changed their vetting process when it comes to getting new players. “Every general manager has a feel for the type of guys they’re looking for,” he added. “I know character is very important to Brett and something he spends a lot of time on.” It’s looking as though they might be ready to drop Hill completely, although that mostly depends on how his criminal case, which recently reopened, goes.
