Black-ish creator Kenya Barris will soon have a new series on Netflix starring Rashida Jones.
Black Excellence, Netflix said Friday, aims to give viewers another new spin on the family sitcom medium. Barris also stars and will produce under his Khalabo Ink Society banner as part of his overall deal with the streaming platform. A writers room for the single-camera comedy launched last week.
The series has been a long time coming, as Barris revealed in a celebratory Instagram post describing Black Excellence as a “passion venture” between himself and Jones.
“There’s NO ONE else I would have wanted to go on this ride with and NOBODY else crazy (and SUPER smart) enough to do it,” he said Friday.
Back in September, Barris gave fans some insight on what moved him to leave ABC for Netflix.
“There’s this P.C. culture that’s been created where people feel like not talking about things makes it better, but I think it makes it worse and that’s why I wanted to talk about the last year,” Barris, speaking on an eventually canned Black-ish episode dealing with matters of Trumpism, told The Hollywood Reporter.
