Kyrie Irving Reportedly Could Sign With the Nets Over the Knicks

Written by on March 30, 2019

Boston Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving is expected to enter free agency this summer, and according to the New York Daily Newsthe former Cavaliers champion is rumored to favor the prospect of signing with the Brooklyn Nets over the New York Knicks.

The site cites a recent NBA TV interview with David Griffin, the former GM of the Cavaliers, who reportedly made similar claims about Irving’s mindset and the best next move for his career. “I think Brooklyn is the fit that’s better for him in terms of his mindset,” Griffin is quoted as saying. “I think he likes what they’ve done there, culturally.”

However, over the past few months, as news began circulating about Irving’s rumored decision to opt out of the final year of his Celtics contract, the New York Knicks were cited as a likely team for the 27-year-old superstar. The suspicion posed in the Daily News was positioned as a means of replacing Frank Ntilikina, the Nets point guard who is out for the remainder of the season due to a groin injury. However, author Stefan Bondy also explains that the Knicks were pushing to sign Irving this coming summer.

According to Bleacher Reportdespite the “depleted draft picks” from the 2014 Nets-Celtics trade that landed two aging veterans on Brooklyn’s court, the Nets appear “ready to make a leap.”

Back in October, Irving pledged his commitment to resign with the Celtics, however the team’s star point guard has made comments that have since created speculation surrounding his allegiances. “I don’t owe anybody shit,” Irving notably told reporters in February.

However, with Golden State’s Kevin Durant rumored to be headed to Boston this summer, Irving’s mindset is subject to change.
