Lakers Acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Brother Kostas Off Waivers

Written by on July 22, 2019

The Los Angeles Lakers have acquired Kostas Antetokounmpo, according to The Athletic‘s Shams Charania.

Charania shared on Twitter that Los Angeles picked up the younger brother of the reigning MVP off of waivers. The 21-year-old power forward and center spent most of last year playing in the G League for the Texas Legends. He averaged 10.6 points and 6.1 rebounds in 40 games in the developmental league and played in a grand total of two games for the Dallas Mavericks. In those pro games, the younger Antetokounmpo played 11 minutes and scored two points.

Given the allegations of rampant tampering that have followed Los Angeles since they acquired LeBron James, fans couldn’t help but joke that the acquisition of the MVP’s brother was an underhanded ploy to lure Giannis away from the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Lakers are pretty well set for superstars going into the next few seasons. James is sticking around and they acquired Anthony Davis in the offseason. DeMarcus Cousins helped flesh out the roster after Kawhi opted to head to the other Los Angeles NBA franchise. However, they could be looking for the Greek Freak come 2021 when the older Antetokounmpo’s contract ends and LeBron is pushing 37.
