Leonardo DiCaprio Shuts Down ‘Titanic’ Door Question

The somehow-still-raging door debate from Titanic was recently brought to the attention of Leonardo DiCaprio. If fans who believe Jack could have fit on the door that saved Rose’s life are looking for a co-conspirator, however, they will have to look elsewhere.

In an interview of DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie for the upcoming Quentin Tarantino movie Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, MTV News raised the issue that has divided the internet for multiple years. DiCaprio refused to stoke the flames, though. He repeatedly declined to comment.   

“Could you, could you have squeezed in there? You could’ve, couldn’t you?” Pitt asked.

“Did you mention it at the time?” Robbie needled. “Were you like, ‘Should we make the door smaller–”

“Like I said, I have no comment,” DiCaprio interrupted.

Of course, it’s been proven multiple times that space on the door is not the main concern. The door would not have floated with both Jack and Rose lying on it. Everyone from Australian math students to Mythbusters found as much (though they both added the caveat that they could both float if they used Rose’s life vest to bolster the door’s bouyancy).

James Cameron, the director of Titanic and ultimate authority on the door, said that physics don’t matter in a movie that was always about a doomed romance.

“The film is about death and separation; he had to die,” Cameron said in a 2017 interview with Vanity Fair. “So whether it was that, or whether a smoke stack fell on him, he was going down. It’s called art, things happen for artistic reasons, not for physics reasons.”

Science and art are against the door truthers and Leonardo’s fence-sitting leaves the tally well in the movie’s favor.
