Lil Uzi Vert, Young Thug, Gunna Sued Over “Strawberry Peels” Sample

Written by on January 6, 2023

As if Young Thug and Gunna needed any extra legal issues, the YSL artists and Lil Uzi Vert are being sued over “Strawberry Peels,” a Wheezy-produced track that appeared on 2020’s Lil Uzi Vert vs. the World 2 project.

According to TMZ, Sun City Publishing is reportedly accusing the rappers and the producer of using an unauthorized sample of Blackout’s 1995 record “Dim da Lights,” featuring Lil E and Lil’ Slim.

The plaintiffs point out that “Strawberry Peels” has garnered more than 39 million streams on Spotify and over 4 million plays on YouTube. The company estimates the track has generated about seven figures since its release, and it’s now seeking at least $1 million in damages.

The suit also lists Generation Now and its parent company Atlantic Records as co-defendants.

The MCs and labels have not publicly commented on the lawsuit.

News of the filing comes as Young Thug prepares for the YSL RICO trial in Georgia. The 31-year-old, legal name Jeffery Lamar Williams, was one of 28 people who were named in a sweeping indictment involving his music imprint. Prosecutors say Thugger and his co-defendants—including Gunna, Yak Gotti, and Thug’s brother Unfoonk—participated in a criminal enterprise that carried out violent acts including attempted armed robbery and murder.

Gunna, born Sergio Giavanni Kitchens, was released less than a month ago after entering a plea deal. Thug and 13 others will begin their trial next week.
