Long-Delayed ‘X-Men’ Movie ‘The New Mutants’ Gets New Trailer and Release Date

Written by on January 6, 2020

After an interminable stint on the back burner, 20th Century Fox’s horror-themed X-Men spinoff The New Mutants has finally gotten a release date of April 3, 2020.

To coincide with the news that the long-awaited film will actually hit theaters, Fox shared a fresh trailer. Set in a secret facility, the story concerns five young mutants who have only just started to understand their powers. Adapted from the X-Men comic series of the same name, the movie stars Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Henry Zaga, Blu Hunt, Alice Braga, and Charlie Heaton of Stranger Things

Directed by Josh Boone, The New Mutants first started its life all the way back in 2014, although it only went into full production in 2017. Fox first shared a trailer back in October 2017, with an intended release date of early 2018 but this was later revised to Feb. 2019 to allow for additional post-production time. At one point it was indicated the film would undergo reshoots in order to make it more “frightening,” but once Disney acquired Fox these plans never materialized.

After three delays, Boone excitedly shared the latest trailer on his Instagram. During the time The New Mutants has sat in production hell, it was announced Boone would serve as director for two miniseries based on Stephen King novels, The Stand and Lisey’s Story. The former will come to CBS All Access, while the later is headed for Apple TV+.
