Everyone with two ears and a heart was excited by the news that Beyoncé dropped a companion album to The Lion King, but no one as much as Lupita Nyong’o. The Kenyan actress posted a video of herself dancing to “Brown Skin Girl,” which shouts her out by name.
“She need an Oscar for that pretty dark skin/ Pretty like Lupita when the cameras close in,” Beyoncé sings in the song.
Nyong’o was all smiles in the clip, beaming at the compliment from Queen Bey.
“Brown Skin Girl. Thank you @Beyonce for this Gift!! #BrightnessIsJustWhoYouAre,” she captioned the video.
Beyoncé worked with a number of African artists on the album, in a nod to the setting of the film and the way that the original soundtrack’ incorporates African musical traditions into its musical numbers.
“This soundtrack is a love letter to Africa,” Beyoncé said in a rare interview. “I wanted to make sure we found the best talent from Africa and not just use some of the sounds and do my interpretation of it. I wanted it to be authentic to what is beautiful about the music in Africa.”
It clearly worked, as fans are smitten with the new release and particularly the Blue Ivy-featuring “Brown Skin Girl.”
