Madonna is facing backlash for recreating the scene of Marilyn Monroe’s final photoshoot and, as TMZ reports, the scene of her death.

In the images for the cover of V Magazine, Madonna poses on a bed and beyond, imitating Monroe. Monroe died in 1962 following a reported overdose at her Los Angeles home, and her final shoot was for Bert Stern’s The Last Sitting, which the pop star is borrowing poses from. She also poses alongside prescription pills, as Page Six reports, and a few Twitter users are sharing their dislike for Madonna’s latest move.

“For some morbid and eerie reason, Madonna decides to re-create Marilyn Monroe’s death bed,” one user wrote when sharing image comparisons on Twitter. “The black and white photo is actually Marilyn Monroe’s bedroom where she died.”

Many on Twitter have come to her defense, while others are more concerned with a fur coat she’s wearing. Photographer Steven Klein said in a release, via NME, that the shoot didn’t have as much to do with Monroe as it did the photographer-subject relationship, and he added that when he sent Madonna the photos, she was “taken by the incandescent fragility of Marilyn at that moment in her life.”

“We decided to find a hotel suite and try to capture the liaison between a star and the camera, the mystery, and magic of this creative collaboration,” he said.
