Marie Kondo Shares She’s ‘Kind of Given Up’ on Being Tidy

Written by on January 28, 2023

Marie Kondo, author of the 2014 best-seller The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, admits she’s no longer obsessed with living a clutter-free life.

In a recent webinar with the Washington Post, Kondo revealed her organization habits have changed after having three children. “My home is messy, but the way I am spending my time is the right way for me at this time at this stage of my life,” Kondo said.

“Up until now, I was a professional tidier, so I did my best to keep my home tidy at all times,” she added. “I have kind of given up on that in a good way for me. Now I realize what is important to me is enjoying spending time with my children at home.”

The author’s new book, Marie Kondo’s Kurashi at Home: How to Organize Your Space and Achieve Your Ideal Life, which hit shelves in November, sheds light on Kondo’s new way of life.

“The true purpose of tidying is not to cut down on your possessions or declutter your space,” the author notes on her website. “The ultimate goal is to spark joy every day and lead a joyful life.”

Kondo followed up her 2014 best-seller with an eight-episode 2019 Netflix series Tidying Up, which helped people find peace in their lives by cleaning up their homes. Kondo returned in 2021 with another Netflix show, Sparking Joy With Marie Kondo. Both series are now available to stream on Netflix.
