Mark Hamill Contemplates Possibility of ‘Star Wars’ Fatigue

Written by on April 11, 2019

In light of the underwhelming box office performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story, which starred Alden Ehrenreich, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson, and Thandie Newton, last year, it begs the question: Are moviegoers beginning to experience “Star Wars fatigue”?

Mark Hamill believes that might be the case.

During his appearance on the Awards Chatter podcast, Hamill—widely known for playing the role of Luke Skywalker—admitted that even though he would never “tell them how to run their business,” there is a possibility of Star Wars fatigue. “Yes,” he said, per The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m not gonna tell them how to run their business, but is there a possibility of ‘Star Wars fatigue’? Yeah, I think there is. I’ve experienced it, to a certain degree. But they never listen to my ideas anyway, so who needs ’em?”

With a budget of $250 million that doesn’t include marketing costs, Solo only grossed $393 million. For comparison, 2016’s Rogue One, and 2017’s The Last Jedi both eclipsed the $1 billion worldwide mark at the box office.

Fatigue or not, a lot more Star Wars content is coming our way. The upcoming Disney+ streaming service will host a slew of shows that will take place in the Star Wars universe. There’s The Mandalorian, the seventh season of The Clone Wars, and Star Wars: Rogue One prequel.
