Michelle Obama’s Memoir ‘Becoming’ Is the Fastest-Selling Book of the Year

Written by on November 21, 2018

In everything she does, Michelle Obama goes high. And that includes selling books. Her new memoir Becoming is the fastest-selling book of the year.

According to Forbes, the former First Lady’s book sold over 700,000 copies in its first day on the market. The book dropped on November 13 and instantly sold 725,000 copies across all formats.

In a press release, Barnes & Noble shared that the book was their fastest-selling adult title in over three years and posted the best first-week sales of 2018. The book beat out Bob Woodward’s Fear: Trump in the White House while becoming the fastest seller since Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird sequel Go Set A Watchman

“We knew Becoming was going to be one of the biggest books of the year, but it has now officially had the best first week of sales of any book in 2018, and is among the fastest sellers in Barnes & Noble history,” Barnes & Noble Senior Director of Merchandising Liz Harwell said in a press release. “This is definitely the must-have book of the holiday season.”

Becoming‘s publisher Penguin Random House shared that they printed 1.8 million hardcover copies of the memoir for the book’ first run and have already ordered a second printing of 800,000 copies. That brings the total number of hardcover copies in print to 2.6 million. The book is currently available in English and Spanish and is expected to be translated into 31 languages.

The top three sellers in adult books this year have all been political. Obama is followed by Woodward and then former FBI director James Comey’s A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership.
