Michigan Couple Has First Daughter in Husband’s Family Since 1885

Written by on April 7, 2023

A Michigan family welcomed a baby girl this March—the first female child that’s been born into the family in 138 years.

ABC7 reports that the last time the Clark family had a girl was in 1885. Before Andrew Clark married his now-wife Carolyn 10 years ago, he warned her that it was very likely they would only have male children.

“I’m like, ‘Oh, it’s a 50-50 chance every time. What do you mean?’ He goes, ‘No, legitimately, we have not had a girl in our direct line in over 100 years’,” Carolyn told Good Morning America.

That information wasn’t enough to prevent Carolyn from marrying Andrew. They had their first child together, a boy, and then later, in 2021 Carolyn was pregnant again. Sadly, she miscarried, and then a year later, found out she was pregnant once again. The couple was grateful yet wary of the pregnancy due to the miscarriage.

“When we found out we were pregnant, we honestly didn’t care if we were having a boy or girl at that point. We just were thankful to be pregnant and just praying for a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby,” Carolyn said.

The Clarks decided to wait to find out the baby’s gender and had a reveal party for their family and friends. Everyone was set to find out the sex of the baby at the same time by biting into cookies that would either be filled with blue or pink icing.

“We kept it a secret to ourselves as well. So I just assumed it was going to be blue in the center of the cookies and it’d be another boy in the lineage,” Andrew said. “I was shocked. I think I just stared at the center of that cookie like, it’s really pink. So it was a good surprise for us.”

They welcome their daughter, Audrey Marie on St. Patricks Day. Carolyn said, “We’re so happy that she’s finally here and once again, that she’s healthy and that everything went well with the delivery.”
