Miley Cyrus Settles $300 Million “We Can’t Stop” Lawsuit

Written by on January 4, 2020

Miley Cyrus has settled a multi-million dollar lawsuit over her 2013 single, “We Can’t Stop.”

According to Reuters, Miley Cyrus, her label RCA Records, dancehall artist Flourgon, and other defendants filed a joint stipulation to the court on Friday to dismiss the lawsuit with prejudice.

Flourgon initially filed his lawsuit against Cyrus and RCA in March 2018. He claimed that “We Can’t Stop” was very similar to his 1988 hit, “We Run Things.” Flourgon describes the track as a “reggae favorite”; the single reached No. 1 in Jamaica. Flourgon accused Cyrus of misappropriating portions of the song, including the line “We run things, things don’t run we.” Flourgon and other contributors to “We Run Things” sought $300 million in damages from Cyrus and RCA.

On Dec. 12, Cyrus’ lawyers wrote a letter to the court explaining that a settlement agreement had been signed. The details have not been disclosed, but Miley’s attorneys claim that stipulations will be filed to the court “pending payment of the settlement proceeds.”

“We Can’t Stop,” produced by Mike Will Made-It, was featured on Cyrus’ Bangerz album and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 100 in August 2013.
