Minnesota Timberwolves Fire Coach Tom Thibodeau

Written by on January 7, 2019

The Minnesota Timberwolves have fired team president and coach Tom Thibodeau, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The team has been an absolute mess this season, with Jimmy Butler‘s trade drama overshadowing almost anything the Twolves did on the court. You know your squad is in trouble when the year’s biggest story comes from practice. While Minnesota hasn’t been the worst team in the West, their 19-21 record doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. It looks like team owner Glen Taylor was ready to move on, axing Thibs after a 22-point win over the Los Angeles Lakers

Woj notes that Minnesota might be considering 76ers assistant coach Monty Williams and former Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg. Hoiberg took over for Thibodeau after Tom was fired by Chicago in 2015. Hoiberg was let go from the Bulls in December. While Hoiberg is considered a top candidate to fill the coaching vacancy at UCLA, the NBA insider claimed on Twitter that he would prefer a position in the NBA.

He also pointed out that whomever the Wolves pick, they will be strictly a head coach and not hold a front office position in the way that Thibs did.
