Mo’Nique Says Oprah Gives Different Treatment to White Alleged Abusers Like Weinstein

Written by on February 4, 2020

Mo’Nique won’t remain silent about the hypocrisy she feels Oprah Winfrey displays when it comes to cases of sexual misconduct.

The Precious star took to Instagram Monday to point out what she calls a “disparity” in how the talk show host regards celebrities who have been accused of sexual crimes. “Dear Oprah, I felt compelled to write you this open letter after observing the disparity in the way that you seem to treat people, who were accused of the same allegations,” her post read.

The comedian then brought up Oprah’s 2017 interview with CBS This Morning, where the talk show host said that she tries to find the “silver lining” in every situation, in regards to Harvey Weinstein.

“You also said ‘if we make this all about Harvey Weinstein then we have lost the moment,'” Mo’Nique continued, bringing up the controversial documentaries on Russell Simmons and Michael Jackson. “When you either are, or were going to be a part of documentary on Michael Jackson, and Russell Simmons, how is that not making it all about them? Interestingly, Brother M.J. was acquitted, and deceased, so how is he not off limits?”

“Russell and Harvey are accused of the same thing so in fairness how do you not ‘support’ the accusers of both, as you said you did with R.S., or [did] you look for the silver lining for both, like you said you did for H.W.?” she added, referencing the disgraced filmmaker and the accused hip-hop mogul.

Mo’Nique then went on to make her point about Oprah’s so-called hypocrisy: “The only difference between the two is there skin color and doesn’t H.W. have way more accusers?”

Oprah stepped away from her executive producer role in the documentary that explores the allegations made against Simmons last month.

Mo’Nique and Oprah have a history of beef stemming as far back as 2009—even if it is pretty one-sided. The comedian mentions it in the letter, during the time both women worked on Precious.
