‘Mortal Kombat’ Movie’s Original Stars Reunite to Play the Video Game

Written by on September 20, 2019

Actors Linden Ashby and Robin Shou from the original 1995 Mortal Kombat movie met up to play the 1992 video game.

While competing in the game, both actors divulged the details of shooting the scenes for three matches: Liu Kang vs. Sub Zero, Johnny Cage vs. Scorpion, and the title fight, Liu Kang vs. Johnny Cage. Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, Mortal Kombat was a surprise hit, sitting at No. 1 at the box office three weekends in a row in 1995 and grossing $122.1 million at the box office.

However, the sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation didn’t fair as well after the departure of a majority of the main cast. Now, a new film is forthcoming from producer James Wan.

“There was so much that could have been done with this franchise that wasn’t done,” Ashby told the Hollywood Reporter. “I love the fact that they’re rebooting it.”

“It wasn’t really about the action and the martial arts and the fighting,” Shou said about the original film. “It was the dynamic of each character. You could tell we really cared for one another.”

Joe Taslim will be cast as Sub-Zero; Jessica McNamee will play Sonya Blade; Josh Lawson has been tapped to play Kano; Tadanobu Asano will take on the role of Raiden; and Mehcad Brooks has signed on as Jackson “Jax” Bridges.

The Mortal Kombat reboot is slated to hit theaters on March 5, 2021.
