North Carolina rapper Walter Morell McKoy Jr., known as Bussdown, is facing life in prison. The Robesonian reports the 24-year-old was convicted on Friday, May 15 for the murder of 21-year-old William Covington, who was killed on March 31, 2016. McKoy was found guilty of first-degree murder, robbery with a firearm, and discharging a firearm inside city limits.
The shooting of Covington reportedly stemmed from an argument over a missing firearm. The judge on the case said McKoy visited Covington on the day of the shooting, and they were seen talking in a car. The two men then got into a heated fight with one another and McKoy fired the weapon as they struggled over it. Covington was shot three times in the head, and due to the grouping of the wounds the prosecution claimed that it could not have been an accidental discharge.
In 2017, Bussdown released a song titled “Cookies” in which he rapped, “I rob a n***a for all of his chains and all of his weed/I bust his brain, I leave him stankin’ down in them trees.” Earlier in the song, he also rapped, “I hit a n***a with a 16.”
Senior Assistant District Attorney Martha Duvall did not specify whether the lyrics was a deciding factor on his incarceration, but rap lyrics have previously been used in court as evidence in murder cases, most notably with “Hot N***a” rapper Bobby Shmurda.
