Deadline has learned that Netflix is developing a series based on the horror video game franchise Resident Evil. Constantin Film, the German film production and distribution company which helped bring adaptations of the game to the big screen, will serve as the studio behind the streaming service series.

Despite the project being in its early stages, the understanding is that this series will “expand the ‘Resident Evil’ universe and deepen the existing mythology.” The series will explore the “inner workings” of the Umbrella Corporation, and how the outbreak of the T-virus came to be. Even though the show is currently in search of a showrunner, it’s expected to have “Easter eggs” to keep their longtime fan base satisfied, and the gore and violence that kept them coming back for more.

The report comes one day before Capcom releases Resident Evil 2, the remake of the 1998 video game of the same name, for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Back in 2017, Variety reported that Constantin Film had plans to reboot the film franchise, just months after Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, which was believed to be the last installment in the six-movie series, hit theaters.

While The Final Chapter signaled the end of an era for the theatrical releases, the film still hauled in over $300 million at the box office, suggesting that significant interest remained for the movie adaptation.

Stay tuned as more information about Netflix’s Resident Evil series rolls out.
