Netflix Signs Extended Deal to Keep New York’s Iconic Paris Theatre Open

Netflix recently reopened New York City‘s iconic Paris Theatre for Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story, and now, the company will make sure it stays open for the foreseeable future. As Deadline reports, Netflix has signed an extended lease agreement for the institution. It’s not clear how long it will last, but for now, the one-screen venue will remain open for special events, premieres, and theatrical releases of its original movies.
The iconic theater originally closed back in August, but Netflix helped it reopen for a limited showing of Marriage Story. With a growing number of projects from critically-acclaimed directors like Martin Scorsese and Alfonso Cuaron, Netflix has committed to small theatrical runs for prestige releases. The streaming giant has already put The Irishman on Broadway’s Belasco Theater, and it’s expected to make its way to the Paris Theatre, too.
“After 71 years, the Paris Theatre has an enduring legacy, and remains the destination for a one-of-a kind movie-going experience,” Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos explained. “We are incredibly proud to preserve this historic New York institution so it can continue to be a cinematic home for film lovers.”
It’s not clear if any movies not produced by Netflix will be shown at Paris Theatre. Regardless, the move marks a dedication from Netflix to help preserve the theater-going experience with what would otherwise be a shuttered venue.
