Authorities have launched an investigation after a man survived a nine-story plunge from a New Jersey high rise.
According to the New York Post (which also published graphic video of the aftermath), the terrifying incident took place at around 10:30 a.m. local time Thursday at 26 Journal Square in Jersey City. Photos posted on social media support eyewitness claims that the man landed on a BMW parked outside the building. Onlooker Christina Smith told the outlet the man managed to stand up after the fall, before asking others “What happened?”
“I heard a big boom and I didn’t think it was a person at first,” Smith explained. “The back window of the car just busted out—exploded. Then the guy jumped up and started screaming. His arm was all twisted. I was like, ‘Oh my God!’ I was shocked. It was like being in a movie.”
Smith said she immediately called 911, as the unidentified man pleaded with bystanders for help. The individual was seen with injuries on his arm and face. He was reportedly transported to the hospital shortly after, but his condition remains unknown at this time.
According to the Post, Jersey City police have since shut down surrounding areas, including the Journal Square PATH Station and Hudson County Community College. Law enforcement is now trying to determine what led up to the man’s fall, as it remains unclear if he accidentally fell, was pushed, or jumped.
