New Orleans Saints Give Sean Payton 5-Year Extension

Written by on September 15, 2019

Sean Payton isn’t going anywhere. According to Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer, the New Orleans Saints have locked their head coach into a deal that runs for another five years, taking 55-year-old Payton all the way through the 2024 season.

That the team would want to keep Payton on is not surprising. He’s been the most successful coach in the history of the once miserable franchise, leading them to their first-ever NFC Championship in his first year with the team while the city itself was recovering from Hurricane Katrina. In 2009, he took the team to its first-ever Super Bowl and Drew Brees and co. bested the Indianapolis Colts by a score of 31-17. Since then, the team has been largely successful, barring a few down years prior to the 2017 season and Payton’s year-long suspension for his part in Bountygate. The Saints have won a playoff game each of the last two years only to lose in heartbreaking fashion in the divisional round and NFC Championship Game.

Payton himself said that he hoped to stay in New Orleans in a recent interview with the NFL Network.

‘This is home,” he said. “I have a house here. I’m here full-time. Every year, we do more.”

The details of Payton’s deal have yet to be released.
