New York City mayor-elect Eric Adams announced on Twitter Thursday that he plans on taking his first three paychecks in bitcoin, as part of his vision to make the Big Apple “the center of the cryptocurrency industry.”

Adams appeared to be trying to outdo Miami mayor Francis Suarez, who vowed to take his “next paycheck 100% in bitcoin.” Suarez responded by congratulating Adams on his victory and welcoming the “friendly competition in making our respective cities a crypto capital!”

Adams’ spokesperson Evan Thies told New York Daily News that he will look into making bitcoin an option for city employees.

Aside from his ventures into cryptocurrency, Adams also said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe that he would like to “revisit” the vaccine mandate for city employees, urging current mayor Bill de Blasio to sit down with union leaders during his remaining time in office, something that the current mayor did.

Adams defeated Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa on Wednesday to become the city’s second Black mayor, joining the late David Dinkins. Adams, a former NYPD captain and Brooklyn borough president, plans on reducing city agency spending by instituting the Program to Eliminate the Gap, or PEG, appointing an efficiency czar who will conduct quarterly audits and determine if these government agencies are spending their money properly, and wants to attract out-of-town businesses by providing a tax credit, depending on their relocation destination.
