Pete Rock Posts and Deletes Message Blasting ‘Trash’ Drill Music

Written by on May 28, 2022

In a post that has since been deleted, legendary hip-hop producer Pete Rock suggested drill rap is “doo doo and it disrupts the soul.”

This week, Rock shared a video of New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who has been targeting drill as artists in the scene get linked to allegations of real-life violence. While Adams’ attempts to censor drill haven’t proven all that effective, it’s worth noting that he made sure to avoid how social factors lead to the violence drill often depicts. In the clip, Adams suggested the rise in popularity of the scene is to thank for the city’s uptick in violent crime, which Rock appeared to co-sign in his since-deleted post

“Drill rap! That’s trash hop not hip-hop I been told y’all about this kinda shit,” wrote Rock in the post, which included the clip of the mayor. “IDC call me what you want but that kinda hip-hop is doo doo and it disrupts the soul I told y’all that already man lol smh. Nobody speaks up on this trash lol. … Drill rap not even for the birds or the streets its the result of greed, people with no talent, and the destruction of the culture.”

It’s not clear what prompted Rock to remove the post, but it’s clear that he’s not a fan of the city’s popular movement. “Y’all never see the play when it’s happening and everyone complains but does not speak up and say a word,” Pete wrote. “Now this! … This how we going out. It’s on social media but who is really promoting this? Talk about that smh.”

After Adams voiced his concern about the “alarming” scene in February, he later met with some of Brooklyn’s most promising talents to discuss the situation at hand.

“We’re going to roll out something together on the whole conversation and we’re looking forward to it,” said Adams.
