The hosts of the Ladies Like Us podcast have apologized for not checking T.I. when he made comments about taking his daughter to the gynecologist annually to get her hymen checked.
Nazanin Mandi and Nadia Moham received a ton of backlash after the episode debuted and concede that their laughter was a “knee jerk reaction” They have since taken down the episode.
The co-hosts said they “were completely caught off guard/shocked and looking back, we should have reacted much differently in the moment.” They added, “We are not perfect, take full accountability for our lack of action.”
Planned Parenthood has some words for T.I. regarding taking his daughter to the gynecologist to “check her hymen.”
In a series of tweets, the nonprofit wrote, “Idk who needs to hear this but virginity is a made-up social construct, and it has absolutely nothing to do with your hymen.”
“A virgin is someone who’s never had sex. But ‘sex’ means different things to different people, so ‘virginity’ does too,” the organization tweeted. “Many don’t care what it means or think it matter. Whatever you believe, the fact is you can’t tell if someone’s had sex by checking their hymen.”
Planned Parenthood added, “Some people think you can tell if someone’s had sex before if their hymen is stretched open. But that’s not the case. Say it with us: YOU CAN’T TELL IF SOMEONE’S HAD SEX BY THE WAY THEIR HYMEN LOOKS OR FEELS.”
The nonprofit’s comments arrive after T.I. said during a podcast interview that every year he goes with his 18-year-old daughter Deyjah to the gynecologist to make sure her hymen is “still intact”—or to confirm that she’s still a virgin. He said that “as of her 18th birthday,” it was. He also confirmed that he knows that there are other ways the hymen can break.
Many on social media were calling T.I.’s actions an abuse of privacy, while others saw it as a double standard since he knows his son is sexually active and is ok with it.
