Authorities in Brazil say they found an extensive collection of Nazi artifacts inside the residence of an alleged child abuser.
According to CNN, Rio de Janeiro police came across the trove Tuesday while serving an arrest warrant on suspicion of pedophilia. The 58-year-old unnamed suspect was being monitored by police after he was accused of raping a minor and trying to children into his condo. When officers arrived at his home, they discovered more than 8,000 pieces of Nazi memorabilia that is reportedly valued at around $3.5 million. Police say the collection included everything from from flags and photos of Adolf Hitler to coins and official Nazi uniforms.
“It´s appalling. I have never seen anything like it. I felt like I was at Inglourious Basterds [sic] movie,” Rio Police Chief Luis Armond told the network. “We are just starting the investigations, it’s not a common case. We need to trace how he acquired those items, from who and where. And now we have a problem on how to store it, since it can deteriorate or be stolen.”
The chief told Reuters the man from a wealthy family and may have used his inheritance to purchase the items from illegal online auctions. The items will reportedly be stored in a museum.
“He is a smart guy and articulate, but he’s a Holocaust denier, he’s homophobic, he’s a pedophile and he says he hunts homosexuals,” Armond told Reuters. “I’m no doctor, but he seems to me an insane psychopath.”
The suspect was also charged with possession of child pornography, illegal gun possession, and racial discrimination. He faces up to 30 years behind bars if convicted of all charges.
