Premiere: Kyan Asks “How Dare You Make Me Love You” On Sombre New Single

Cambridge-born singer-songwriter Kyan has never been one to shy away from darker topics — whether it’s the epic grandeur of “L.A” or the Orwellian paranoia of “Neighbours” — and his new single is no different. On “How Dare You Make Me Love You” (due July 19), Kyan tortures himself over a recent break-up, agonising over the reasons why and expressing his frustration that he opened himself up to the person so much, aiming his scorn both at himself and the lover who left him high and dry. It can be tough to move on from such a situation; it’s not impossible to get over, but it will involve the kind of heartache you can hear in Kyan’s voice throughout his sombre new single.

Speaking with Complex via email, Kyan told us: “I found it incredibly difficult to accept that those who had seen so much value and potential in me in so many ways could just decide to cut their losses and move on. That incomprehensible rejection experienced as I cycled through the highlight reel, all of the things we’d done and achieved together, all of the history, all of the moments and memories… It was a sharp but blurred pain that I couldn’t quite get a handle on, and the ‘double breakup’ left me feeling paranoid and cynical about people’s intentions.”
